The origins of the sport

Les origines du sport

It is difficult to trace the history of baseball and its origin. What is known is that games with bats and balls have existed for a long time. In ancient Egypt, there are already traces of balls hit by sticks as a pastime.

A sport similar to and often considered the ancestor of baseball is rounders. But it is likely that both rounders and baseball share an older ancestor: cricket.

The rounders is however quoted in 1744, by the British writer John Newberry in his book: A little Pretty Pocket-Book. The term baseball is already used at that time, but does not really refer to a sport similar to baseball that we know.

Indeed, at the base, this term is used to designate several different sports already practiced in the north of the United States like rounders, town ball and round ball.

Obviously, it is when these sports reach the Manhattan and Brooklyn areas with the New York teams called Knickerbockers, that the evolution tends to look like what we know.

Mondernization and fantazy

Named after the New York team, the Knickerbocker Rules arrived in 1845 and were the first modern rules of the famous sport. They were established and written by Alexander Cartwright based on the rules of rounders and town ball. This man is the founder of the Knickerbockers of New York and will have a huge impact on the sport.

In fact, the Knickerbockers of New York had already been playing this new sport seriously for at least 2 years. But the crossed rules of rounders and town ball were officially adopted on September 23, 1845.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the legend of a certain Abner Doubleday was born. This mythical story tells how this West Point student was in fact the creator of baseball during the summer of 1839 in Cooperstown.

The stylized story gained popularity and credibility, eventually leading to a centennial celebration in 1939.

But the true connoisseurs of the sport refuted the involvement of Abner Doubleday and pointed out the close links with rounders. Several books were published to invalidate this urban legend that had taken on a very large scale. Today still, by pleasure or by convictions, many Americans continue to think that Doubleday is indeed the creator of their favorite sport.

However, on June 3, 1953, the United States Congress officially credited Alexander Cartwright, creator of the New York Knickerbockers team and a major contributor to the installation of modern rules, as the founder of baseball.

Since the modern rules were validated in 1845, the previous games will not be officially counted although they actually took place. The game of June 19, 1946 in Hoboken is considered the first baseball game in history.

An unofficial championship was set up between different teams in New York, the sport was called the New York Game, adopted the rules of the Knickerbockers and became increasingly popular with Americans. During the Civil War, New York soldiers taught their regional sport to their comrades. This will result in a national democratization when the soldiers return to their respective regions of the United States.

In 1871, the first major league was created, adopting the name National Association of Professional Base Ball Players.
